The Clonard Replaces Burnside

The Clonard, an Irish pub, has replaced Burnside at 506 Grand Street.
Back in July, an on-premises license was filed by Pound Loney, Inc, and doing business as The Clonard. Both are references to Belfast.
Pound Loney was a historic Belfast neighborhood famously redeveloped in the 1960s. Originally a cow pasture turned working class Catholic neighborhood, it was slated for redevelopment for many of the same reasons neighborhoods in New York Cit were redeveloped — to punish the people who lived there. The redevelopment was so successful, the complex was knocked down three decades later.
Clonard is likely a reference to the neighborhood in Belfast. It was part of an electoral district that from 1985 to 2014 reliably elected Sinn Féin party members.
The Burnside had been an upscale cocktail bar. 506 Grand street was up for rent with the former bar included.
