Food Town Signs Go Up on 695 Grand Street

Foodtown is set to open in the base of new low income building on Grand Street

The large-format retail space on the base of 695 Grand Street have signs promising a Food Town will open in the space.

Signage for Food Town doesn’t guarantee the store will be open anytime soon. The corner space of the Denizen Bushwick at Evergreen and Noll has had Food Town Coming Soon signs for years.

Nearby is another Food Town which recently took over the former Brooklyn Harvest on Metropolitan Avenue.

The all-affordable housing building has 50 units of housing above the retail space, with 38 distributed by lottery and 12 reserved for formerly homeless people.

Occupancy of the building was delayed after National Grid threw a hissy fit over regulations on a new pipeline. The utility company refused new gas connections, causing the already built building to be delayed. National Grid continued building the new pipeline despite the state’s commitment to ending new gas hookups and net zero carbon by 2040, but cancelled a LNG facility in Greenpoint.

A lottery was set up for the housing units with monthly rents starting at $820, based on local AMI.

The commercial space in the property was offering 9,000 square feet of ground floor and 7,200 square feet of basement.
