Best Pizza has opened on Grand Street

The newest location of Best Pizza has opened at 800 Grand Street.

The signage had been up for the last 6 weeks, but the newest pizzeria on Grand Street finally opened this past weekend.

The shop was cash only this weekend as a computer error was preventing them from taking credit card orders, but that should be resolved soon.

The tiny shop has a ledge for eating a slice, but it is otherwise a take out joint.

The original Best Pizza opened in Williamsburg in 2010 taking on a space vacated by the first iteration of Brooklyn Star. Brooklyn Star eventually reopened at 593 Lorimer Street, has since closed, and is now DeStefano’s Steakhouse. (To go further down the rabbit hole, Edith’s then opened at the former DeStefano’s location.)

The location at 33 Havemeyer Street suffered from a fire. Brooklyn Star chef Joaquin Baca along with the folks behind Roberta’s then backed Frank Pinello to open the pizzeria in the space.

The store was a former bakery, so there is a century old bread oven in the restaurant. Early New York pies like those made by Lombardi’s and Totonno’s were baked in bread ovens rather than Neapolitan pizza ovens, which is why New York style pies are larger.

Best Pizza is building a mini empire. In the Hudson Valley, Best Pizza can be found in New Paltz were some locals called it a gentrifier pie. In Montauk, there is a Best Pizza and Dive Bar, and at the American Dream Mall, the oversized enormous mall at the Meadowlands sports complex in New Jersey, there is even a location in the food court.

Pinello also starred as the host of The Pizza Show, a Vice production examining pizza. His episode featuring Brooklyn Pizza starts with Roberta’s.

Founder Frank Pinello grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He graduated from Culinary Institute of America, but prefers the title pizzaiolo.

Best Pizza makes standard New York Style cheese pies, but also has become famous for their white pie. Topped with ricotta, mozzarella, caramelized onions, and sesame seeds, the unique sweet-salty flavor has made the mini chain into a destination.

The Grand Street location is closed on Mondays, but is open until 9pm Sunday, Tuesday to Thursday, and 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

The only folks disappointed by the new pizzeria might be the owners of Mario’s, a new pizzeria that opened twoo weeks ago at 812 Grand Street.
