Dee Best Zeppole and Calzones opened on Graham Avenue giving Italian festival food a full-time home.
Dee Best Zeppole has been a fixture of the neighborhood Giglio festival and OLMC fefast hosted each July in Williamsburg. The Italian American festival benefits the Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and features food stands and carnival rides.
Dee Best has been a mainstay of the festival selling zeppole, deep fried Oreos and Calzone. The new storefront makes these foods available all year round.
The menu has expanded, albeit only just slightly. There are now several additional calzones including vegetarian friendly cheese and spinach.
The calzones are made fresh to order. Dough is stretched and filled with the choice of ingredients including cheese and ham before entering the deep fryer. Calzones come with red sauce.
The zeppole were especially fresh last week.
The shop is very narrow and has an open kitchen.
Orders are placed at the front or through the window open to the street. Window ordering should prove a popular option in the summer when people are hanging out on the street.
There is a small dining room in the back of the restaurant.
The walls are covered with photos from the festival stand.
The restaurant wasn’t too busy on a weeknight, but a customer did order a calzone.
The Zeppole were fried fresh to order. They tasted better than those at the fair.
Greenpointer’s adds the restaurant is owned by Joey Dee, who also runs neighborhood favorite, DeStefano’s Steakhouse, which moved to the corner of Lorimer and Conseylea two years ago.
